Moving Towards More Sustainable Construction

Sustainability is an increasingly important consideration when adding space to an existing property. The construction method, materials used, amount of waste generated and energy performance of the finished building can all contribute to its overall environmental impact.

SIP construction brings several of these considerations together. The panels are prefabricated off-site, allowing materials to be measured and manufactured accurately before they reach the building site. This can help improve material efficiency and reduce construction waste compared with more traditional methods of assembling a structure entirely on-site.

The SIP building system also combines the structural and insulating elements of the building envelope. The OSB structural facings provide strength while the insulation core contributes to the thermal performance of the walls and roof. When properly designed and detailed, an insulated and airtight building envelope can help reduce uncontrolled air leakage and heat loss, reducing the amount of energy needed to maintain comfortable internal temperatures.

Smart Rooms’ SIP panels use engineered OSB made from sustainably harvested spruce together with a polyurethane insulation core. The combination provides a lightweight, strong and highly insulated panel suitable for extensions, garden rooms, offices and other buildings.
